You can even take your vehicle across the Cook Strait on the ferry with our multi-island. FAQs

The driver must (i) hold a full, current and valid driving licence appropriate for the vehicle class while they are using the vehicle. (not being a learner’s, provisional or pink licence) and (ii) have an International Driving Permit (IDP) or official translation (only if licence is not in Roman alphabet).

New Zealand issued Pink licences will state the words Limited, Alcohol Interlock or Zero Alcohol Limit on them. Budget will not rent to a Pink licenced customer.

An International Driving Permit is not a stand alone document and this must be carried with your valid domestic driving licence for it to be valid.

Chinese licences are acceptable as long as they are also accompanied with a full English translation from an approved translator. This also includes a notary translation done in China.

The minimum age to rent a vehicle is 21 years of age. A Young Driver Surcharge may apply.

Yes! We provide multi-island hires that enable you to cross between North Island and South Island. Whether you're renting a truck to move a few kilometres or you need ute and van hire on a multi-island basis, Budget is the team to call.

We are happy to provide all of the accessories our customers need to get from A to B. When it comes to moving van hire and rental, we take this commitment to customer care very seriously. We offer blankets, boxes, bubble wrap and other accessories designed to keep items safe when they are on the move for purchase or hire. We don't believe that cheap removal van hire should come at the cost of your health or peace of mind either! This is why we also offer hydraulic lifts and trolleys for rent to achieve seamless moves without the stress, strain and potential for injury.

Budget offers three options for fuel:

  1. Return the vehicle with the same amount of fuel as when rented and no refueling fees will apply
  2. Return the vehicle with less fuel than when rented and pay a refueling service charge for the fuel used. The refueling service charge is a rate higher than the local retail fuel prices. The latest refuelling service rate will be shown on your rental agreement and is subject to GST.
  3. Purchase the prepaid fuel option

All additional drivers must meet the same minimum age & driver's licence requirements as the main renter. Each additional driver may be charged a daily fee.
